Ellee Spalding’s paintings and ceramic works investigate the balance between structure and randomness. She uses simple systems that invite collaboration with chance, challenging her control through limits, constraints, and the mapping of numerical data. Driven by a fascination with encoding information, she translates random data through analog frameworks to create. Planes, prompts, layers, coordinates, lines, and boundaries guide the development of each work. 

The work considers our reliance on constructed systems as both stabilizing and constraining within a chaotic present. Limits, even invented, can allow a perceived forward progress. By integrating systems that partially relinquish control, she questions how authorship is redistributed when process begins to dictate form. Through this analog approach to a generative system, she investigates the role of the artist as both architect and participant.
